EGMONT SHOWGROUND DEBT

£5OOO CHEQUE FOR MR. ARUNDELL.

ASSOCIATION HAS £3511 IN CASH.

When a cheque for £5254 4s 6d is paid over to Mr. W.' J. Arundell, New Plymouth, on Wednesday the Egmont A. and P. Association will reduce the mortgage on the showgrounds at Hawera from £lO,OOO to £l5OO. This is the largest cheque ever written by the association and easily the most important. The secretary, Mr. R. McCay, reported that the association already has £3511 in cash, which has been contributed by the public. The total amount of provincial donations is £3906 but at once the association can pay the £5OOO necessary to take advantage of Mr. Arundell’s offer to give the other £5OOO of his mortgage as a- donation to the association. Mr. J. Winks has come forward with an offer to: lend the association the balance of £l5OO on mortgage at; 5 per cent, for five years. The association can repay this in multiples of £lOO at any time without notice.

' The odd £254 4s 6d to be paid on Wednesday is interest owing on the mortgage. The large cheque will be paid at Stratford.

The general committee was advised yesterday by the Hawera’ Borough Council that while it could not remit any of the rates owing it would make a donation of £25 towards the reduction of the association’s indebtedness. Thanks were accorded the borough council and Mr. Winks.

OPERA HOUSE TALKIES. "THE WORKING MAN” . SEASON. "The Working Man,” which was held over at Palmerston North for an extended season, will open a season for four nights and four matinees at the Hawera Opera House to-day. Arliss has the role of John Reeves, one of the biggest shoe manufacturers in the United States. Hartland is another. They both loved the same girl, and Hartland won her. In business they are friendly enemies—until Hartland dies. It robs Reeves of some of the zest, and he becomes perturbed when he sees the Hartland business beginning to fail. The Reeves business flourishes the more on that account, of course. »Reeves takes a holiday, happens to meet Hartland’s son and daughter on their own yacht, and with fine chivalry he sets about getting the Hartland business back on the rails. Another Walt. Disney colour pantomime, “Three Little Pigs,” will also be presented. Seats may be reserved at Miss Blake’s.
