BRITISH BOND REPAYMENT

NO MENTION OF NEW ISSUE DECISION WISE AND PRUDENT REDEMPTION DATE IN APRIL AN ECONOMY ANTICIPATED British Wireless. Rugby, Jan. 13. The Treasury has given notice of the repayment of 4 per cent. Treasury bonds 1934-36 on April 15, which is the earliest date on which the right of redemption occurs. The bonds, the outstanding amount of which is £105,000,000, were issued in 1930. The fact that nothing is said in the notice about a new issue to replace the maturing bonds is interpreted in the City to mean that the Government does not propose to issue a replacement loan for the time being. The Times City editor regards this decision as a wise and prudent' step. The undertone of the markets is undeniably strong, with an exceptionally easy monetary situation, and it is probrble that the Treasury will be able to obtain better terms by waiting. Whether the new issue takes the form of a short-term or long term loan, it may be assumed that the operation will result in a saving to the Exchequer.
