PLUCKY BOY SCOUTS

GIRL BROUGHT TO SAFETY. Christchurch, Jan. 14. While swimming in the Ashley River, the bed of which had been badly scoured in the recent floods, Miss Lucy Crawford, of Brockenhurst, Woodend, had a narrow escape from drowning. After swimming about 50 yards Miss Crawford found herself out of her depth and went under. Her sister, seeing her in difficulties, called to G. Appleton, one of the Woodend Scout troop, who was on the bank further upstream, for assistance. By the time he reached the spot Miss Crawford had gone under for the third time, but was still struggling. Two other Scouts, L. Southen and K. Shepherd, also came to the rescue, and the three brought Miss Crawford to the bank in an unconscious condition. In the rescue Southen, the first to reach Miss Crawford, was almost dragged under. Miss Crawford revived after artificial respiration.
