CONTROL OF PATEA BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL HELD. There was a full attendance of councillors at the Patea Borough Council’s monthly meeting last night, the Mayor (Mr. F .Ramsbottom) presiding. An application for the use of the borough chambers for the purpose of interviewing parents was granted Mi. Dash, principal of the Hawera Technical High School. ... Two applications for the remission of the 10 per cent, penalty on current rates Wf;e granted. The Mayor’s action regarding the ei®ection of a verandah was endorsed. Cr Haworth said buildings were being erected at the beach for which no permits had been procured. Cr. Scott asked that when next year s estimates were being considered the claims of the Seaside Improvement Society should be favourably regarded. Crs. Christensen, McKenna and Haworth were appointed a committee to confer with the solicitor, to submit a policy regarding outstanding rents and rates and report at the next meeting. Mr L. Hamerten was appointed ranger. The engineer, Mr. J. O. Cunningham, reported that the power supply had been continuous during the month with two exceptions, on the 27th, when the supply was off twice for a few minutes from causes beyond control, and on the 28th., when a severe lightning storm interrupted the supply for several minutes The figures for the month, with December of last year in parentheses were—Hydro, 10,210 (12,210); Diesel, 550 (6426); bulk, 27,525 (30,240); total, 38,285 (48 876) The figures showed a decrease on’last year of 10,951, due to temporary supply given to the West Coast Refrigerating Co., at this time last year and a higher demand on the bulk, but showed an increase of 5765 over December, 1931 The Diesel ran for 11 hours during the'month, partly for peak reduction and on occasions to pump water. The rough weather during the month was responsible for a number of faults to services. One service was broken by a falling tree. Lightning was also responsible for a number of fuses, particularly in Kakaramea and Cambridge Streets, but no material damage was done. The following additions were made: Lighting points 10, heating points 6. One 3-phase motor of 3 h.p. was connected and one new consumer added to the system. Five additional heating meters were installed. Approximately 1,434,300 gallons of water were pumped for a consumption of 4098 units, a decrease of 57,750 gallons and 165 units. Although the amount of water pumped showed a decrease it was found that hoses had to be prohibited. This was due to the sudden spell of dry weather in which the consumption of water became abnormal and the use in the borough was more than the supply from the wells. With rain falling and the prohibition of hoses the situation rapidly became normal. The wells when last measured showed no further decrease in flow. The water supply at the hydro promised to be ample for the demand likely to be made on it. ' . The streets supervisor, Cr. F. Naismith, reported work for December had included the metalling of Richmond S'rfeet, Beach Road and Main Street facings where necessary. Streets clipped and mown were Egmont Street North, Bedford, Leicester, Dorset, Stafford, Middlesex , Lincoln and.' Oxford Streets. Trees in Scotland and Bedford Streets were attended to and were making fair progress. CRICKET AT MEREMERE. MOKOIA ELEVEN DEFEATED. The Mokoia cricket eleven was defeated by two runs by Meremere. Play had to be stopped several times during the match owing to showery weather. Mokoia batted first, making 69 runs, the chief scorers being J. Newey 18, T. Percy 12 and McMillan 11. H. Goodman took four wickets for 24 runs, W. Geary three for nine, J. E. Le Marchand two for 13 and J. Bloor one for four. Meremere made 71, Geary scoring 23 and M. Murray 16. N. Hawkins took six wickets for 27 runs, R. Church three for 13, and G. Walsh one for 23. PORT OF. PATEA. January 15:—Expected: Motor vessels Inaha and Hawera, from Wellington.
