ESTABLISHMENT OF COUNCIL CARNEGIE CORPORATION GRANT. FIRST MEETING OF THE NEW BODY. POSITION OF EXECUTIVE OFFICER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At the first meeting of the New Zealand Council for Educational Research at Wellington to-day further steps were taken to establish the work of educational investigation made possible by the grant from the Carnegie Corporation. Six weeks ago word was received that the corporation had decided to found a research council in this country and to provide it with an annual grant of £3500 for five years. The members of the new council, all of whom were present to-day, are Professor T. A. Hunter, vice-chancellor of the University of New Zealand, Professor W. H. Gould, professor of education at Victoria University College, Professor J. Shelley, Canterbury University College, professor of education, Mr. F. Milner, rector of Waitaki Boys’ High School, Mr. C. C. Gilray, headmaster of McGlashan College, Dunedin, Mr. D. MRae, inspector of schools, Auckland, and Mr. T. U. Wells, a member of the Auckland University College Council.

A draft constitution prepared by a sub-committee was submitted to the meeting. Some amendments were made and the constitution will be adopted after steps have been taken to have the council incorporated. The general aim outlined in the constitution is the fostering of educational research in New Zealand by every means in the council’s power and valuable results are anticipated. The officers of the council, who will constitute an executive committee with headquarters at Wellington, were elected as follows;—President, Professor Hunter; vice-president, Mr. Milner; secretary, Professor Gould. 'lt was decided to call for applications for the position of executive officer, whose functions will be to carry out research and co-ordinate various research activities under the auspices of the council. This officer’s salary was fixed at £lOOO a year with travelling expenses. The first appointment is to be for a period of three years. The council hopes that applications will be received not later than March 12, when the council will proceed to make an appointment. Preliminary steps were also taken in the formation of local research branches with headquarters in the four main centres of New Zealand.
