AUSTRALIAN NAVY

OFFICER ON LOAN. SERVICE IN FAMOUS SHIPS. London, Jan. 4. The services of Captain H. G. C. Franklin, R.N., have been lent to the Royal Australian Navy for two years as from June next.

Captain Franklin entered the Navy in 1907, and served in some of the most famous ships during the war, including the Iron Duke. In 1917 he was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth, receiving the rank of commander, and at the end of 1917 he, became gunnery officer on H.M.S. Lion. In 1918 he was appointed a member of the staff of the Commander-in-Chief at The Nore;' in 1921 he was promoted to the rank of captain; in 1925 he commanded H.M.S. Emerald on the East Indies station; from 1927 to 1929 he was Assistant-Director of Naval Equipment at the Admiralty; in 1930 he was given command of the cruiser Exeter* and was in coiQmand until July last
