COMPETITION GAMES POSTPONED SOME MATCHES IN LOWER GRADES With the exception of one or two games all competition cricket in Taranaki was postponed on Saturday owing to the heavy rain throughout the province. A senior B game was played at New Plymouth and some non-competi-tion games in South Taranaki. The weather improved later in the afternoon at New Plymouth and shortly after three o’clock conditions were favourable for cricket. New Plymouth senior B, although without three of its best players, agreed to carry on its game against Okato to save the country team making another journey to the town the following week. SENIOR B GRADE MATCH. OKATO’S SURPRISE VICTORY. The only cricket match played in New Plymouth on Saturday resulted in a surprise victory for Okato over New Plymouth at Western Park. New Plymouth batted first and compiled 72 runs. Webber, 28, and Nicoll, 15, were the only double-figure scorers. Roberts, with five wickets for 17 runs, was New Plymouth’s stumbling block. Roberts, 20, Paul, 17, and Grindlay, 11, assisted to raise Okato’s score to 81 to gain a narrow win by nine runs. Lawrence, five for 28, was the most successful bowler for New Plymouth.

NORTHERN JUNIOR GAME. WAITARA DEFEATS OLD BOYS. Playing at Waitara on Saturday Waitara defeated Old Boys by 42 runs. Waitara scored 105 and Old Boys 63. Best scores for Waitara were Dunn, 13, Fahy, 13, Collins, 16, Ellis, 24 not out, while in. bowling for Old Boys McKoy took five wickets for 40 runs and Sisarich three for 41. For Old Boys McKoy made 18, while Chadwick took two wickets for 25 runs, Collins four for 16, and Kershaw four for 10. NO COMPETITIONS IN SOUTH FRIENDLY MATCHES PLAYED. ALLEN’S 61 FOR HIGH SCHOOL. All competition cricket games were postponed at Hawera on Saturday on account of the weather. Two friendly games with scratch teams were played. Hawera High School, with seven of the usual eleven away, beat Power Board by 99 runs to 70. For High School Allen compiled a brilliant 61 and O’Dea batted well for 22. Lendrum was unbeaten with 28 for Power Board, but the rest of the team failed to reach double figures. Old Boys and others beat Hawera B by 98 runs to 92. Duke made 24, Malone 22, Beamish 18 and H. Barker 11 for the winning team, and Geary (28), Cock--erill (20) and Mortlock (15) were Hawera’s best scorers. . Opunake beat Manaia by five wickets. Manaia. in the first innings made 87, Whalen made 46, Christie 13 and Hickey 11 In the second innings Manaia made 93 for seven wickets declared, Christie scoring 34, C. Hobday 30 not out and H. Whalen 14. Maddock, Opunake, took five wickets for 17 runs in the second innings Opunake in the first Innings made 107, Maddock scoring 61 not out and Meuli 13, and in the second 79 for five wickets. Dobbin made 30, Cundy 11 and Meuli 10.
