WAITARA DISTRICT NEWS

PERSONAL AND GENERAL. Mr. J. Blair, chief engineer at the Waitara freezing works, who was taken to hospital on Tuesday, is reported to be making good progress towards recovery. The Clifton Rowing Club will be represented by five crews at the New Plymouth annual regatta on New Year’s Day. The crews are; Heavy Maidens: R. George (str.), O. Sampson, A. Collins and T. Stockman; junior, H. Stockman (str.), J. Donaldson, O. Keith and M. Sampson; McLeod Cup, F. Olsson (str.), O. Sampson, H. Stockman and A. Rowe; youths, R. George (str.), M. Elliot, N. Willison and F. Chittenden; lightweight maidens (under 10st.), L. Byron (str.), K. Keith, E. Blair and T. Sampson. At the. school on Monday night Miss Martin arranged a party as a farewell to those of her pupils who are leaving and with whom she had been associated for over two years. Included among her guests were the children of standard 6 and those of standards 4 and 5 who were members of the basketball team. There were also present Mr. and Mrs. Bullen, Mr. and Mrs. Glasgow, Mrs. Simpson, Misses Knight, Simpson, Pepper and Griffin. The class room was cleared and games and competitions were played by all present. Prizes were presented to the young people who won. Miss Martin received a presentation from the basketball team, through the captain, Hilda Andrews,, who called on Mr. Glasgow to say how the girls have appreciated Miss Martin’s interest in them. The presentation was accompanied with musical honours. Miss Martin in reply stated that her association with the team had given her much pleasure, and she much regretted losing contact with the players. A large amount of stock is coming forward at the Waitara freezing works, including lambs, fat cattle and pigs. On Tuesday the tally was in the vicinity of 4000 lambs. In addition large numbers of pigs and other stock were also dealt with.
