CHRISTMAS DAY PICTURES

ARGUMENT AT CHRISTCHURCH. COUNCIL OPINION DIVIDED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night By eight votes to seven the Christchurch City Council decided to-night not to rescind the previous resolution refusing to allow picture theatres to be opened on Christmas Day. Dr. Thacker’s motion to rescind the resolution was defeated. Dr. Thacker moved that pictures be allowed on Christmas night. Objection was raised that notice of motion was necessary but the deputy-Mayor, Mr. Archer, accepted a motion that the standing orders be suspended to allow further discussion. This motion was lost by eight votes to seven. At the end of the meeting Dr. Thacker gave notice of motion to call a special meeting of the council on Friday to discuss the question again.
