NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK

LITTLE FAST WORK DONE.

MERRY WAY AND BOLD BID WELL.

The rain early on Saturday morning did little except settle the dust on the plough at New Plymouth and again there was little fast work.

The only one to gallop before breakfast was the Potoa filly Epita. She shaped well over a couple of furlongs in 255. Headmistress was allotted steady threequarter pace work, moving in her usual free style. Amyril, Refresher and Silk Sox did half pace while Aussie Ra was cantered twice round.

Courtega, Arvada and Lalla Quex separately did two circuits at a solid half pace. Arvada and Courtega galloped on Friday morning. General Quex and Orapai hopped off at the half-mile but the latter moved scratchily and the two-year-old soon had a lead of three lengths. Orapai gathered -him in in the run to the post and was on terms at the finish. Orapai was lame afterwards and unless rain falls will be difficult to keep in training. Easter Time did two rounds at half pace. Easter Time is making good progress. Bold Bid and Merry Way were given a good working gallop over six furlongs, the last five taking lm. 10s. Merry Way moved freely and easily throughout, while Bold Bid put a lot of dash into his display. Lady Kyra and Tahurangi. did useful pace work.J. Cammick will ride Merry Way, Bold Bid, General Quex and Easter Time at New Plymouth. Cammick is a strong rider who can go to scale comfortably at 7.3. '

HAWERA TRACK NOTES GOLDEN HAIR AND ROUND TABLE. DIAGANO IN GOOD FORM. The tracks were again hard and fast at Hawera on Saturday morning. Most of the fast work was done on the plough. Carfex (Cole) and Aga Khan (Vaughan) were together .all the way over a mile in lm. 465. For them the time was not good on account of the slow pace set during the early stages. The first half-mile occupied 54 4-ss. As might be expected both horses were hitting out very strongly at the close.

March Alone (Sheild) moved very smartly to be a length and a-half ahead of Gibraltar (Feasey) over a similar distance in lm. 455. March Alone set the pace throughout the first half-mile, taking 53j5., and six furlongs took .lm. 17 2-ss. March Alone went well but Gibraltar was inclined to loaf, especially after the straight was reached. Golden Hair (Grylls) and Round Table (Coyle) recorded the best effort of the morning by leaving five furlongs behind in lm. 2 3-ss. As usual they were on terms at the finish with Golden Hair going much the easier. Both horses worked very pleasingly. The first three furlongs was run in the fast time of 36 3-ss.

Diagano (Vaughan) had no trouble in beating Chief Line (Sheild) over six furlongs in lm. 16As. Diagano has been galloping in fine style of late and if he repeats these efforts on race day a winning bracket should soon come his way.

The fast nature of the track was emphasised when Haunui (Feasey) had a length to spare from Weatherzane (Sheild), traversing half a mile in 49 l-ss. Both horses went much better than usual, Haunui going particularly well.

St. Clara (Adlam) ran a mile alone in Im. 46 l-55., hitting out very freely. Owner-trainer C. Le. Campion has now commenced much stronger work with her and on the previous morning she occupied Im. 255. for a working gallop over six furlofigs. A newcomer to the track, Fantastic (Sheild), sprinted half a mile in 535. It was her first gallop for a considerable time and as she'is not very forward it was satisfactory. Fantastic is a five-year-old brown mare by Day Comet out of Persis, thus being a half-sister to that useful mare Nucleus. She was in work at Hawera as a three-year-old and showed a fair turn of pace without running into a place in the couple of starts she had. When schooled over hurdles she jumped particularly well, but she is rather small for a hurdler.

Calamine (Basset) and Ingenuity (J. M. Pine) recorded lm. 565. for a working gallop over a mile. No Doubt (Vaughan) reeled off half a mile in 495. He is in good trim for Christmas racing and will trouble the fields in juvenile events. On the outside of the course proper Whenuakura (Parkes) went a round at working gallop pace the reverse way. The Chief Ruler mare (Brough) covered three furlongs in 39Js. She is shaping very promisingly and after a few more gallops the sister to Just So should sprint fast. Sandlark, Green Linnet, Papar'ua, Don Erma, Singer, Benedictine and Miss Louvain did pace work on the main plough. Eara, Radiant Star, Silver Wings, the Hunting Song colt and the Sandstar youngster all made use of the two-year-old track. Richfield, Oriel, Beau Star and Havering worked on the inside plough the reverse way. Green Linnet has not yet completely recovered from her soreness. As the hard tracks are hindering her work she is an unlikely starter, although accepted in the Flying Handicap at New Plymouth.
