CALF REARING PRIZES

FOUR HUNDRED TOTAL ENTRY JUDGES ENGAGED FORTNIGHT. IMPRESSIVE IMPROVEMENTS. The calf-rearing competition for North Taranaki Boys and Girls’ Clubs attracted 400 entries, a considerable increase on those of previous years. Seven groups, including an additional one, had entries over a large area and it took the judges, who do their work without payment, almost a fortnight to do the judging. They were much impressed with the way the calves had been reared. The high standard set in previous years had been more than maintained, while there was a decided improvement in the calves from a dairy type viewpoint. Another good feature was the way the children had handled the calves, and how splendidly they had been taught to lead. Next year these points will be taken into consideration in making the awards for condition, it being felt that capable handling was an important part in calf-rear-ing. A pleasing feature had been the fact that practically every boy and girl who entered the competition had fol-, lowed it through to completion. There were few defections.

. The judges were gratified at the large number of field days that had been held at the schools this year to witness the judging. These were an indication of a real live interest in the club work on the part of the teachers and parents. The notebooks had been quite equal to those of previous years. The judges were: Condition, Messrs. F. W. Sutton, J. Whitehead, H. H. Olson, P. G. Knight, J. H. Allen, L. G. Andrews; dairy type, Messrs. W. K. Morris, H. Salway, R. W. D. Robertson, A. J.
