STARR-BOWKETT SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING AT HAWERA The annual meeting of the Starr Bowkett Building Society was held at Hawera on Friday. . '■ Mrs. C. Wilton, Hawera, purchased £4OO in the second group.- Mr. J. Rauch, Hawera, obtained £4OO in the second group and Mr. E. W. Good, Wellington, obtained £4OO in the third group, *. The retiring directors,, Messrs. F. Squire, J. Rauch and M. Barraclough, were re-elected. Messrs. W. Page and H. R. Kemp were ■ elected to ’ fill the vacancies caused by the retirement of. Messrs. P. T. Donnelly and H. Robinson respectively. At a subsequent meeting of directors Mr. F. Squire-was re-elected chairman and Mr. J. Gray vice chairman.

The directors’ report was as follows: — The second group has more than maintained its vitality, there having been allotted during the year eighteen appropriations of £2OO each. The profit for the year amounts, to £156 6s Id, which is a fair average over the life of the group. Owing to business conditions the board has been forced to grant concessions of payments to several members, as allowed by rules, but in no case is there a likelihood of loss on securities, provided the necessary time can be given to meet the circumstances.

The third group also has been satisfactorily maintained with regard to payments, but owing to withdrawal of shares the appropriations have been curtailed. The greater proportion of these withdrawals were cases of deceased members. The directors have been obliged to forfeit several shares in this group through arrears, but every possible leniency was granted to members before exercising this penalty. A profit of £172 6s lid has been made on the year’s working.

The directors consider that during the difficult period which is being experienced the society’s operations have proved conclusively that with continued thrift on the part of members and careful management by the directors, the society more than justifies the end for which it was originally started. HAWERA “COMMUNITY SING.” DISAPPOINTING ATTENDANCE. There was a disappointing attendance at Messrs. Owen Pritchard and Frank Crowthers “community sing” at Hawera on Saturday in aid of the Hawera Municipal Band’s funds. The singing, however, was good and those who attended spent an enjoyable evening. The song leaders were well-known before the “sing,” if only because of their radio work. They made a big impression, Mr. Pritchard with his flow of amusing patter and gift for getting singers going and Mr. Crowther with his splendid accompaniments. A large orchestra of school children, under the baton of Mr. H. C. A. Fox, gave enjoyable items.

FLOWERS OF ELOQUENCE.

SPEAKERS AT OPUNAKE MEETING.

Champions of the Opunake Harbour Board waxed eloquent at the public meeting at Opunake on Friday night. Rich metaphors adorned their speeches.

Mr. J. S. Hickey, chairman of the present harbour board, set the ball rolling. “They were dragging in a red herring,” he declared, “and that’s about all that will ever be berthed there.” Then Mr, W. A. Sheat weighed in.

That wharf was built .by faith, hope and imagination, and the greatest of these was imagination. ' The estimates in the board’s prospects when it was raising money for the wharf were not estimates, they were guesstimates.

They said the present chairman was like a Mussolini; well, Mr. Brennan has tried to be a Mussolini, a Hitler and an O’Duffy all in one.
