CHILDREN’S CALF-REARING
SOUTHERN DISTRICT JUDGING. WANGANUI AREA COMPETITION. Calves in the Wanganui education district school calf-rearing competitions were judged at Whenuakura, Opaku and Kohi on Monday. The maximum is 100 marks, divided as follows; Chart (with essay on the calf) .30, type 30, rearing, care of calf and manner (leading, etc.) 40. The judges were Messrs. J. Robb and T. M. Remington, Westmere, and the organiser, Mr. J. B. Hogg, chief agricultural instructor to the education board. Mr. H. Cleland, of the Department of Agriculture, Wanganui, was also present. There was a large entry of calves at Whenuakura, and the judges stated that the quality of the winning calves , there Indicated that the show for the campion to be held at Marton next March would be one of the. best seen in the Dominion. They were pleased to see the increased interest being taken by the school children. and their teachers, and the knowledge gained in last year’s judging appeared to have been applied. Both firsts, second and third at Whenuakura and the first and first junior were eligible to go to Marton, making six in all from the group. Mr. Hogg announced that the secretary of the Marton A. and P. Show Association (Mr. A. Way) had said the association would bear half the cost of transport if the calves from the northern districts of Wanganui were sent to the show for the championship. This meant that groups 7 and 8 (Alton, Manutahi, Kakaramea and Whenuakura, Opaku and Kohi) would join with Waitotara, Waverley, Ngutuwera, Wai Iwi, Maxwell, Westtnere and Rapanui in sending the winning group calves by lorry. Seven calves were paraded at Opaku, all exhibited by girls. This was said to be a record in the history of the calfrearing movement in the Wanganui district. This was the first display at Opaku, and it was a credit to a school of
