PAY IN MERCHANT SERVICE

PETITION TAKEN TO PARLIAMENT. TUG STEAMS UP RIVER THAMES. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 55 pin. London, Nov. 30. A petition on behalf of officers of the merchant navy, taken to Westminster from Tower Bridge aboard the decorated tug Britannia, contains the signatures of 12,000 officers and 10,000 members of the public, and demands an inquiry into the pay and conditions of service of merchant ships. The tug throughout the voyage was greeted with foghorns and all the river craft crews lined up and cheered. The petition was taken to the House of Commons from Westminster Pier and presented by Mr. P. J. H. Hannon and Lieut.-Colonel J. T. Moore-Brabazon. The petitioners complain that most foreign officers are higher paid than the British and many British ships are manned by foreigners, though 3000 British officers and 40,000 seaman are unemployed.
