FOUR DONATIONS OF £250

EGMONT A. & P. FUND £3700 LOYALTY OF HAWERA DISTRICT. AVERAGE OF OVER £23 PER DONOR. SOCIETY ELECTS LIFE MEMBERS. Including four donations of £250 each, the Egmont A. and P. Society’s mortgage redemption fund is now £3700. There were one donation of £125, seven of £lOO, six\of £5O, fourteen of £25, twelve of £2O, three of £l5, nine of £l2, 67 of £lO and a large number of smaller sums. Of the total, £l4OO was donated by people in the town area. The remainder came from the surrounding district. The Egmont A. and P. committee members alone contributed over £9OO, an average donation of £35, and the general average donation for the total sum was over £23 per donor. “The canvassing for the amount was just like a big picnic,” said Mr. B. C. Bennett, speaking on behalf of the canvassing committee to a meeting of the society at Hawera yesterday. The people of both town and country, he continued, had been most sympathetic, and the committee was never really turned down when making an appeal. Only people who definitely could not afford to help had refused to give financial assistance. Hawera was a fine district and he was proud to be a citizen of it. The Mayor of Hawera, Mr. J. E. Campbell, said the people’s ready response was a splendid demonstration of their loyalty to their institutions and their pride in their district. When the Hon. E. A. Ransom had been at the jubilee show he had especially remarked on the evident pride Hawera people took in their district, and that pride was amply justified. Mr. Campbell paid a tribute to the work of the canvassers. Fifty new members were elected at the meeting, and the following life members were elected: Miss C. M. Buchanan, Mrs. J. E. Campbell, Mrs. J. M. Collins, Miss M. Lysaght, Mrs. C. Mcßae, Mrs. F. Riddiford, Miss M. Sutton, Miss R. A. Syme, Messrs. J. T. Barkla, J. Barrow, J. W. Campbell, E. C. Constant, J. A. Dalgetty, W.
