GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETS. TOC H GRANTED USE OF GROUNDS. A meeting of the general committoe of the Taranaki Agricultural Society was held at New Plymouth yesterday, when there were present Messrs. H. C. Sampson (chairman), P. J. Peterson, W. Hah, W. B. Grant, E. Griffiths, A. R. Gudopp. C. W. Ruebe, A. 1. Moore, S. Topless, J. D. Pearce, T. Dodunski, G. W. Browne, T. J. Martin, E. S. Allen, A. P. Gudopp, A. P. Lister, F. W. Sutton, P. G. Knight, J. T. Goodrick and S. E. Hawke. Notification of the allocation of £lOOO from art union proceeds to the society’s funds was received from Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. The society recorded a vote of thanks to Mr. Smith for his support of the society’s work.

An application for. the use of a portion of the Waiwakaiho showgrounds and of three boilers on February 14, 15 and 16 for the New Plymouth Boys’ High School cadets was granted. , Mr. Topless was elected to the grounds committee. It was decided to adopt a suggestion that more suitable accommodation for horses be provided at the showgrounds. Recommendations from the schedule revision committee were adopted as follows:—

(1) That no steer riding contest be included in the programme for the 1934 show, but that additional trotting events and a dual jumping event be included in the programme, and that the light horse committee go into the question of introducing suitable novelty events for the afternoon of People’s Day. (2) That the parade marshals dispense with the “line-up” of the parade; that the animals encircle round the ring twice and then go out.

(3) That where a judge'prefers not to judge a class because of some interest in the exhibits, such as having bred or owned them, the appointment of a suitable judge shall be made by the senior steward in the section, and the original judge shall retire from the ring while the class is being judged. As the result of the appearance of Mr. W. H. Woodward and the Rev. R. Fordham Clark as a deputation from the New Plymouth group of Toe H the group was granted the use of the society’s showgrounds at Waiwakaiho for a fortnight in January, when a health camp for 50 boys is to be held. He was sure the Toe H members were doing good work, said Mr. Sampson, and if the society could help the poorer children of the district in any way he felt it should. The grant was made subject to a guarantee that the grounds would be left in a satisfactory condition.

A letter was received from Mr. W. Ambury, Auckland, a former member of the society, who had recently celebrated his golden wedding. A telegram of congratulation had been sent to him by the secretary, Mr. W. P. Okey. “Your congratulatory telegram reached me yesterday,” wrote Mr. Ambury, “when surrounded with a house full of old friends (some of 50 years’ standing), including seven or eight Taranaki folk, several of whom I met at New Plymouth on November 20, 1890, the day we opened business on the comer of Brougham and Devon Streets. We received scores of telegrams and letters from' all over the Dominion, and nearly 100 callers. We appreciated nothing more highly than your telegram on behalf of the society, which brought back thoughts of many happy years of work in trying to boost the society.”
