ENTERPRISING PROMOTORS

REVIVAL OF OLD SUGGESTION. A NEW PRIMARY INDUSTRY? There is a growing tendency to urge the farmer, for months now in search of some cure for low prices, not to place all his eggs in one basket. A Stratford business man who was rummaging among files and drawers and papers yesterday discovered an old company promotion cirndar. He read it and thought there was no reason why Taranaki people should confine themselves to butter and cheese, meat, wool, pigs and honey. The suggested enterprise is outlined in the circular as follows, inter alia:— “The object of the company is to operate a large cat ranch on the plains of Taranaki, where land can be purchased cheaply for this purpose. To start with we require about one million cats. Each cat will average about 12 kittens per annum, the skins being about sixpence for the white ones and two shillings and sixpence for the pure blacks. This will give us twelve million skins a year to sell at an average of say Is 6d, makng a revenue of about £2500 a day. A man can skin about fifty cats a day at 15s per day and it will take about one hundred men to operate the ranch; therefore the nett profit will be about £2425 per day. “We shall feed the cats on rats and start a rat farm. The rats multiply four times as fast as the cats. If we start with a million rats we will have four rats per day per cat, then we will feed the rats on the carcases of the cats from which the skins have already been taken, giving each rat one' quarter of a cat. It will thus be seen that it will be selfsupporting and automatic throughout. The cats will eat the rats and the rats will eat the cats, and we shall get the skins. “Later •we shall consider the desirability of crossing the cats with snakes and they will then skin themselves twice a year,-thus-saving the men’s wages for skinning and also getting two skins from each cat..” ELTHAM CROQUET GAMES. Patrons will be pleased with the double-feature programme at the Eltham Theatre to-night and Monday night. The Irst, “Come on Danger,” featuring Tom Keene, Julie Haydon and the inimitable Roscoe Ates (the stuttering comedian) is an action-filled story of the Texas Rangers and the bandits of the Lone Star State. The plot is of an unusual order and really worth-while. The whole production appeals to one’s sense of adventure and the love of the great out-doors. The second, “The Face at the Window,” is the film version of the stage play that thrilled millions only a few years ago. It is a suspensive, thrilling, mystery drama of the first order and is a British production. Raymond Massey, playing the male lead, is excellent, and is supported by Isla Bevan, both being, well-known British stage stars.
