OBSTACLE ON RAILS
EFFORT TO WRECK EXPRESS. DISCOVERY BY GANGER. An attempt to derail the Broken Hill express train was frustrated near Parkes, New South Wales, recently. At five o’clock a ganger, Lovell Fuller, reported that he had discovered an obstruction on the railway line about four miles from Cookamidgera and 15 miles from Parkes. It consisted of a piece of flat iron, two feet six inches long, eight inches wide, and three inches thick, which was fastened to a rail by a piece of No. 8 wire. The police were unable to find tracks owing to the stony nature of the ground and the fact that a mob of sheep had since passed the spot. If the obstruction had not been found the Broken Hill express, which passed the place at 5.40 p.m., would have been derailed.
