HEROES OVER SEVENTY

DIVES TO SAVE CHILDREN. Three heroes, whose ages range from 70 to 75, figure in the latest awards made by the Carnegie Hero Fund Trust at their meetings at Dunfermline, Scotland. The oldest of the veterans is Joseph Smith, aged 75, an army pensioner, of Inverness. Although he had not been in the water for nearly 20 years he dived from a height of eight feet into Inverness Harbour and rescued a boy from water 13 feet deep. He was awarded £lO and an honorary certificate. A similar award was made to George Sellers, aged 74, of Gourock. Sellers dived from the sea wall at Gourock and pulled to safety a boy who was battling for his life. Seventy-year-old Alfred Albert Kelly, of Douglas, although suffering from bronchitis, swam fully clothed in a strong backwash to rescue a child from water 15 feet deep at Douglas, Isle of Man. He was awarded an honorary certificate and £l5.
