OPENING OF NEW TENNIS CLUB. A new tennis club recently formed at the Waikaka school was opened last Saturday afternoon before an attendance of about 50 players and friends. The following are the officials of the newlyformed club: President, Mr. L. A. Passau; secretary, Mr. E. Mossman; committee, Mesdataes Sandison, Blackwell and Richardson, Messrs. A. Raitt, I. Beaton and R. Etherington. . Before play was commenced Mr. Passau extended a welcome to the large gathering of players and friends and anticipated a successful season for the club. He then called on Mrs. A. K. Margan, a former teacher of the Wa'ikaka school, to serve the first ball over the net, it being returned- by Miss Granville, the present, teacher of the school. Competition matches were held throughout the afternoon, exception for an interval for afternoon tea supplied by the ladies of the Waikaka Valley. Results of play are:— First Round: Mrs. Blackwell and I. Beaton beat Mrs. Richardson and E. Mossman 7—4, Mrs. Higgie and L. Julian beat Mrs. R. Etherington and T. Blackwell- B—6, Mrs. Ralph and A. Beaton beat Miss N. Higgie and W. Raitt 9—6, Miss Smith and A. Raitt beat Mrs. Sandison and L. Woods 15—3, Mrs. Passau and W. Edmonds beat Miss Beaton and R. Etherington 10—9, Miss B. Kelly and G. Mossman beat Mrs. Mossman and H. Raitt 9— Mrs. F. Kelly and D. Mossman beat Miss C. Kelly and F. Kelly 11—9, Miss Granville and L. Passau beat Mrs. A. K, Margan and D. Gower 17—13. Second Round: Mrs. Richardson and T. Blackwell beat Mrs. R. Etherington and E. Mossman 6—4, Miss N. Higgie and I. Beaton beat Mrs. Blackwell and L. Julian B—s, Mrs. Higgie and L. . The first cricket match of the season was held at Matiere on Sunday last when about 20 enthusiasts took part in a practice game. Mr. C. Stewart has donated 10s 6d towards a new mat for the club. ' Tennis Popular.

Tennis is to be a popular pastime in the district during the summer. _ In addition to the two courts in Matiere and the new one at Waikaka, two further courts are being constructed, one in the Mangakaikatea Valley and one at the Otangiwai school. A meeting of enthusiasts held in Otangiwai last Friday dedecided to make an immediate start on clearing and reconditioning the old court at the school Excursion Train to New Plymouth. Judging by the number of tickets already sold at Matiere and in the surrounding districts the train from Taumarunui to New Plymouth on Labour Day is going to be well patronised.
