ASSAULT BY MAORI WOMAN
INDIAN HAWKER STRUCK ON HEAD DISPUTE OVER MONEY THE CAUSE By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 20. ‘Guilty under provocation,” was how Hauiti Materia, a Maori woman, pleaded to-day when charged with assaulting Morar Khusal, an Indian, by striking him on the head with a hammer. The police said the defendant had lived with Khusal from time to time since May and they had frequent quarrels. Last Friday Khusal went to a garage to Start his vegetable hawking lorry. The woman followed, and there was some dispute about money, this resulting in the assault. Materia said that Khusal attacked her as she was leaving the garage, and she hit him in self-defence. She was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within two years. ■ w.
