Mi's. A. Hugo was “at home” to a number of friends on Wednesday. Mrs. A. Yamdley entertained at a pleasant afternoon on Wednesday, her guests being Mesdames Beale, C. Penn, Hill, Harrison, Misses J. Beale, Uniacke, L. Penn, J. Hill and Wilson.
Stratford visitors to Wanganui for the final day of the New Zealand ladies’ golf championships included Mesdames J. C. Allen, H. Bishop, C. Williams, R. Wood, Mark, Misses M. Porritt, R. Furrie, G. North, M. Sangster, M. Malone, M. Lyons and M. W. Little.
Mrs. Jefferies was “at home” to some of her friends on Wednesday afternoon, among those present being Mesdames Vincent, McDowall, A. Coleman, L. Jardine, S. Pitt, L. Furrie, J. Fredric, H. Kirkwood, M. Thorpe, Misses Taylor and Brownlee.
Mrs. J. Cresswell was “at home” to several friends on Tuesday. Those present were Mesdames L. Jardine, W. H. Young, Turner, A. Coleman, M. Thorpe, McDowall, J. Fredric, A. Budge, H. Kirkwood, Miss Brownlee (Oamaru).
Amidst delightful surroundings featured by gaily-coloured flowers and fresh green lawns, the opening of the Avon Croquet Club took place this week. Mrs. R. Masters in an appropriate speech declared the green open and hit the first ball through the hoop. The president, Mrs. Jenkins, welcomed the large attendance of members, friends and visitors from other clubs. Ideal weather conditions prevailed, and many interesting games and competitions were played. Winners of the competitions were Mesdames L. Mills, O’Connor, Fletcher (Hawera), Hughes, North and Clark. Afternoon tea was served by the members. Prior to her departure for New Plymouth Miss Dulcie Pearce entertained at a very jolly party on Wednesday evening, when about 60 guests assembled to bid farewell to their hostess. The evening was pleasantly spent in dancing and games. Amongst those present were Misses Dulcie Pearce, Betty Parker, E. Sears, E. Mehrtens, Molly Femmel, Mona Femmel, Maisie Smart, M. Phillips, D. Thompson, Isobel Schweiters, Peggy McCready, Maisie McCluggage, Molly McCluggage, P. Parker, B. Mills, Una Mills, Marjory Young and Vesta Liddell.
