HAWERA ITEMS

Miss M. Kissling, Remuera, Auckland, who has been visiting Miss M. Black, returned home on Monday. Mrs. W. M. Winks, accompanied by Joy Winks, leaves to-day on a short visit to Napier. Miss K. Murray, Cairo, is Irvine’s guest. Mrs. H. W. Swinbum is ois short visit to Hawke’s Bay. Mrs. W. A. O’Callaghan has returned from Christchurch. Bowls of mauve lilac and sprays of Iceland poppies in tawny, orange hues attractively decorated Mrs. J. B. Murdoch’s drawing room on Wednesday, when Mrs. Murdoch and Miss Ethel Murdoch were hostesses at a gift afternoon in Miss Cameron’s honour. Mrs. Murdoch wore a blue crepe georgette gown, and Miss Murdoch’s frock was fashioned in pique voile florally designed in tomato tonings. Miss Cameron chose a navy crepe suede frock stitched and trimmed with gold. During the afternoon two competitions were played, the winners being Mrs. H. W. Swinburn and Mrs. Dingle. Items which were much appreciated were given by Miss Murdoch (songs) and Mrs. W. G. Strange (elocution). Among those present were Mesdames H. Cameron, Moorhouse, W. Barclay (Manutahi), W. G. Strange, Swinbum, N. F. Stead, J. Dingle, A. Harrop, C. Harrison, W. Syme, Misses Johnston, Spence, Dakers, Arcus, M. Strange, E. Cameron, A. Cameron and O’Shaughnessy. On Monday afternoon and Tuesday of this week Mrs. David Smart entertained a number of friends at tea, when opportunity was taken for a roam round her garden, which is just now looking particularly bright. Mesdames C. Bayley, J, Dash, H. G. Whitehead, G. A. Burgess, W. M. Winks, H. R. Kemp, C. D. Arlidge, Irvine, W. Robinson, Misses Buchanan, Davis, K. Murray (Cairo), J. Buchanan, K. Syms, A. Davis, P. Gannaway and A. Kemp were among the guests.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Ogle are visiting Mrs. Richards, New Plymouth. An afternoon was spent at Mrs. Ross’ home, Waihi Road, on Saturday last, when Miss M. Black entertained a number of friends at an engagement party for her guest, Miss Kissling, Auckland. Glorious festoons of cherry blossom and lilac were arrayed in large bowls about the sitting room, with an occasional slender vase of massed golden kowhai, the effect being delightful. Miss Black wore a smart fawn, brown and white sand crepe frock, the guest of the afternoon choosing a frock fashioned in a grey, white and scarlet mixed check crepe. Mesdames J. J. Pease, B. Shaw (Fairlie), W. Fendall, V. Powell, N. Mirams (Milton), Misses R. Pease, E. Buist, M. Hawken, A. Page, B. Ryan, M. Bright, B. Theed, C. Tonks, A. Wills and K. Coleman were among the guests. After afternoon tea the gifts were wheeled in and presented to the guest of honour, Miss Kissling briefly thanking her hostess and friends.

Mrs. Syme was hostess at tea on Friday in Miss Cameron’s honour, each of the guests bringing an article for use in the kitchen for the guest of honour, who is to be married next week. Mrs. Syme wore a floral voile afternoon gown in tones of pink and black, while Miss Cameron’s frock was i patterned dimity voile, in red and magnolia tonings trimmed with crisp organdie. A novel feature of the afternoon was a mock wedding cake made and decorated by the hostess, and cut with due ceremony by Miss Cameron. Ranunculus and Iceland poppies in rich autumn golds ana reds made pretty decorations in the sitting room, while in the dining room, where tea was served, were masses of feathery fronded heuchera in pink and cerise. A limerick competition was won by Mrs. Barclay (Manutahi), Mrs. R. S. Allwright and Miss E. Murdoch gave vocal solos, and Mrs. W. G. Strange recitations. After tea was served and prior to the opening of the gifts Miss Cameron was the recipient of a bouquet presented by Miss Mary Syme. Among those present were Mesdames D. Cameron, Moorhouse, J. B. Murdoch, N. F. Stead, Allwright, A. Murdoch, Barclay (Manutahi), H. W. Swinbum, J. O’Sullivan (Matapu), Gower (Patea), J. Rogers (Otakeho), A. Harrop, W. G. Strange, H. R. Denize, Misses M. Cameron, A. Cameron, E. Murdoch, M. Joyce, I. O’Sullivan, J. Joyce and Nicholson. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Egglestone are spending the week-end at Napier. Miss J. McCall is to leave to-day on a brief visit to Hawke’s Bay. An evening was spent at Mrs. Walkley’s home on Wednesday, when a number of friends gathered and visited her in the form of a surprise party. Music and dancing was the order of the evening. Mesdames H. W. Swinburn, N. Mirams (Milton), W. Winks, H. H. Bramwell and Misses E. Buist, M._ Green and A. Page were among the visitors. Mrs. Lovegnove, Auckland, arrived on Monday and is with her daughter, Mrs. A. F. Beck. Mr. and Mrs. W. McL’Dowie left last Tuesday on a short visit to Hawke’s Bay. Mr. and Mrs. Hocken were to join them at Feilding and accompany them on the journey. Miss B. Stevens and Miss P. McGlashan left by car yesterday on a short visit to Auckland. Mrs. Bright, Hastings, accompanied by her two small sons, is staying with her sister, Mrs. G. W. Powdrell, Princes Street extension. Mrs. Welsh, Mrs. H. R. Kemp, Mrs. N. F. Stead and Mrs. J. C. Smith were hostesses at tea durin_ the week. Miss J. MacDonald, “Brent Knoll,” Scott Road, is in Craigholm Hospital with a poisoned hand, the result of a boxthorn prick. Mrs. Rowe sen., Wanganui, is visiting Mrs. J. Rowe, Collins Street. Miss J. Powdrell, who has been spending several weeks in the South Island, is to return home this week-end. Nurse A. Russell, late of “Bickleigh” Hospital, Hawera, is the guest of Mrs. S. Beetham, Victoria Street.

HAWERA CROQUET CLUB.

The Hawera Croquet Club’s lawns were opened for the season on Saturday by the club’s president, Mrs. W. G. Strange, who welcomed the visitors from other clubs, and said she hoped the members would have both an enjoyable and successful season. She called on the Mayoress, Mrs. J. E. Campbell, to play the first ball. Progressive croquet was played during the afternoon, Mrs. McKay, Manaia, and Mrs. Adamson tieing for first place. Mrs. McKay won on a draw. The visitors were entertained by the members of the club at afternoon tea.
