ABDUCTION NOT PROVED
CHARGE AGAINST A LABOURER. GIRL AGED SIXTEEN CONCERNED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Oct. 19. Walter Frederick Dempsey, aged 26, labourer, was charged before the magistrate, Mr. E. D. Mosley, with having, on September 2, abducted a girl aged 16 years 5 months against the wishes of her parents. The police said that Dempsey, a married man, met the girl in the botanical gardens, where he was working, 12 months ago. Later they made up their minds to leave home and, on September 2, went to Rangiora, Kaikoura, Blenheim and thence to the North Island, living as man and wife. The girl gave evidence that her home life was unhappy. She had had every intention of leaving home whether she went or not. The magistrate said that Dempsey seemed to have reasonable grounds for believing the girl was 18 years of age, and, taking all the facts into consideration, he thought he was justified in dismissing the case.
