FINE RACING WITNESSED

WHENUAKURA IS BRILLIANT SURPRISES IN FIRST TWO RACES. SIDELIGHTS ON THE RUNNING. (By Wire—Special to News.) Wellington, Last Night. Great racing was witnessed at Trentham to-day, when the course was fast and the weather fine. The Taranaki colt Whenuakura scored most decisively in the Wellesley Stakes, and so far is easily the season’s best two-year-old. The day’s racing opened with a surprise when Walton Park led the way home in the Glen High-weight Handicap. Colossical was first to reach the front, but he was soon supplanted by Te Ua. Others well placed in the run to the straight were Aesculus and Henry of Navarre. D6iran and Chock Say were at the back of the field till they reached the half-mile, where they advanced. Colossical again came to the front in the straight but Walton Park wore him down and won by a good head. Aesculuc, third, was three lengths away, and Revision was fourth, followed by Te Ua, Doiran and Chock Say. The winner made a marked improvement upon the race he ran at Masterton on Saturday and paid a double-figure dividend. 'Colossical ran one of his good races and stayed the journey fairly well. Half-way down the straight Doiran looked likely to win but failed to come on. However, his performance was good as the race was run at a fast clip. Chock Say disappointed but Te Ua should win soon. . Coronilla Performs Well.

Coronilla at a fine price won the Taita Handicap so decisively that she left the impression that she will be heard of in some of the more important juvenile events as the season advances. Coronilla was always one of the leading division, and others who began jvell were Brown Betty, Bodyline and Bazaine. With the race half over Coronilla was drawing away and none of the others had a chance with her in the finish. She won by four lengths from Brown Betty, who was four lengths in front of Bodyline, while Capital, Bazaine, Mother Superior, Zionist and Windscreen did best of the others. The winner is a good filly by Chief Ruler from d’Oro and is trained by R. Alexander for Mr. T. H. Lowry. Windscreen made a very creditable showing without threatening danger.

Prostration Wins Narrowly. Prostration just won the October Hack Handicap from a big field of smart hacks. He was fairly placed at the entrance to the straight and finished very genuinely. Senegal, always handy, was an'otner. to run a great race, while Acceptable showed his usual pace and failed only in the last 20 yards. Catalogue was never in the picture till late in the race, when he came fast on the outeibut could not get up. He was a good fourth when the line was crossed and is due soon. West Tor was in the bunch most qf the way but finished well when he got clear and was just behind the placed bunch. Arastar showed speed but did not stay. Southdown finished very well after being last three furlongs from home. Diagano ran a creditable race and finished fifth. Great Finish in Mile.

The Wainui Handicap, an open mile race, furnished a wonderful finish, and the honours of the contest went to the top weight Curie, who forged to the fore in the last half-furlong and won well by a neck f rom Miladi, who too finished vigorously, with Forestry only a length away and just in front of a bunch, at the head of which were True Shaft and Nightly. Curie’s performance was a good one. There is no doubt he is good at a mile. Miladi’s run was a strong one but she just failed to sustain it at the very end. Forestry is improving. Aga Khan occupied a good postiion half a mile from home but did not come on. True Shaft is sure to be benefitted by the race, also Speed. Nightly ran very well but was not actually dangerous in the straight. Midinette ran badly, being last all the way. Kerbside led nearly all the way and was not far back at the end. In addition she looked as though the race would improve her. Aga Khan stripped pretty well and ran a fair race, but should soon do better. Race Suits Cricket Bat.

There was no great pace on in the early stages of the Wellington Handicap and Cricket Bai was allowed to bowl along at the head of the field all the way. The race was run right into his hands, and L. Ellis handled him perfectly. Brambletom reached the front soon after entering the straight and looked like coming home, but Ellis kept a little in reserve for the final “dab” and secured the verdict with Cricket Bat. Brambietorn was clear second and the decision to make a dead-heat for second place between him and Takakua was a surprise to those on the right line. View Halloo ran a good race despite the fact that the track was too hard for him- He finished sixth. Tout le Mond was last in the run to. the straight and could not get to the leaders in the run home. Shatter made a fairly good showing and was battling out the issue at the distance. With faster pace on all the way there would almost certainly have been a different result. Whenuakura’s Easy Win.

The Wellesley Stakes was the best of good things for Whenuakura, who reached the front at the outset, worked over to the rails and came on to the course proper with a lead of several lengths from Pin Money and Sporting Blood, who were slightly clear of the others. Whenuakura was not troubled to run on to a three-lengths victory over Pin Money, while Marcus Cicero did well to get third only half a length away. As he came from the back of the field Sporting Blood, who was fourth, seems to be promising, while Morbury and Wonderful ran fair races. Whenuakura overshadowed the rest and after him the best seems to be Marcus Cicero.

Golden Wings’ Fine Effort. Golden Wings scored impressively in the Shorts Handicap. He gave a lot of trouble at the barrier but once he got going he reached the front quickly and led on to the course proper from Navaho and Croupier, and in the run home he always held a slight advantage and won eventually by half a length from Croupier, who had about the same margin over Navaho. Great Star was a good fourth. There was a gap of about three lengths to the rest of the field, at the head of which was Pomp. The Masquerader, one of several who gave trouble at the start, slewed round when the barrier rose and dropped his rider. Cadland did not equal expectations. Golden Wings will be improved by the race as he was somewhat above himself.

Emotion All the Way. Emotion ran in front nearly all the way in the Rimutaka Handicap and hung on well to win from King Thomond, who was always well placed and looked likely to get the decision, as when the battle was on in the straight Emotion had only half a length to spare. Epigram ran another great race, finishing a neck behind King Thomond, while Eupator was a good fourth and Bettwyscoed and Whetuma were next. The race should improve Eupator and Grand Review.
