ALLEGED CAR CONVERSION

DRIVER DETAINED AT HAWERA.

SMART WORK BY HAWERA POLICE.

Smart work by Sergeant J. Henry, of the Hawera police, on Wednesday, night resulted in the hirer of a Wellington rental car who had allegedly retained the vehicle for a longer time than he should have done, being intercepted at Hawera. As a sequel Charles Matthew McKendrick, a 22-year-old Wellington baker, will appear in the Wellington Court to-morrow charged with converting the car to his own use. Just as Sergeant Henry was going out of his home on Wednesday evening he heard a wireless announcement that a rental car was missing from Wellington. He made a note of the number and about 10 pan. he saw a travel-stained car in the street. The driver returned to the police station with the sergeant, who telephoned the Wellington police station, where no complaint had then been lodged. The firm that owned the car was consulted and a charge laid. Shortly before midnight McKendrick was arrested and he spent the night in the Hawera lock-up. McKendrick came before Mr. E. Dixon, J.P., yesterday, charged with the conversion of the car, and was remanded in custody to appear at Wellington on October 21. He was taken to Wellington in the car in question yesterday, escorted by Constable Pidgeon. GENERAL ITEMS. Patea Beach Working Bee. An effort to stem the erosion of the ground in front of the Patea beach pavilion was commenced yesterday by a working bee composed of members of the Patea Seaside Improvement Society. A breastwork is to be formed consisting of tarred drums, filled with sand, across the point where erosion has been most severe. The drums will be wired together and securely anchored, and the space’behind them filled with stones and driftwood. The sand will drift sufficiently to consolidate the enclosed area, it is hoped, in a comparatively short time.

Bathing Pavilion Accommodation. The accommodation for women at the Patea bathing pavilion has been almost doubled by the erection of a separate enclosure for younger girls. This provision, which has been desired by bathers for several seasons, has been made possible by closing off of a portion of the verandah space on the northern side, the entrances to both adult and junior sections being adjacent. Patea Tennis Club.

The opening day of the Patea Tennis Club was provisionally fixed for November 4 at a meeting of the committee on Wednesday night. A special sub-committee was formed to investigate the project for a new pavilion and to report upon alternative schemes.. A donation was received from Mrs. and Miss Whitehead for competition between club members in ladies’ and men’s doubles in two grades, with the motive of promotion of play between players of varying standards.
