PIECE WORK RELIEF SCHEME

PROTESTS BY UNEMPLOYED MEN NEW PLYMOUTH MEETING HELD. . / Protests against the proposed system of piecework on unemployment relief i were voiced at a’ general meeting of re- . lief workers in the Workers’ Social Hall,. New Plymouth, last night. There were about 150 present, presided over by Mr. F. Baird. The following motion was carried unanimously: “That this meeting calls upon local bodies to refuse to co-operate p with the national Unemployment Board because in our opinion the relief worker, through protracted unemployment, is suffering from being under-fed and under-clothed and the Relief Workers’ Union contends that the board should show equal interest in security for food, shelter and clothing for the unemployed as it does in setting tasks for the relief worker to compel him to do a certain amount of work for the miserable pit- ‘ tance of relief pay.” Another motion carried unanimously was: “That this meeting calls upon the whole of the trade' unions to hold a mass meeting at New Plymouth to bring pressure to bear on the local bodies to . refrain from participating in this inhuman scheme of piecework on relief schemes.”
