LEPPERTON DISTRICT NEWS

PERSONAL AND GENERAL. At the monthly meeting of the Lepperton school committee there were present Messrs. H. Woisin (chairman), F. T. Crowe (secretary), A. Kilpatrick .and R. Staples. The headmaster, Mr. J. E. Bigelftw, reported that two pupils went to Stratford for the Bayly Memorial Scholarship trials and were to be congratulated on their placings, Darcy Old being fourth and F. Woisin, seventh. As the first three places were claimed by High School boys Darcy Old was particularly to be congratulated. The address by Miss Greenwell under the auspices of the Red Cross Society was postponed on account of the death of Mrs. Waldie’s father, Mr. Scrivener. The cushion donated by Mrs. W. N. Ackland for a competition in connection with the Lepperton branch of the Women’s Division of the Fannefs’ Union was won by Mr. W. H. Aekland. At a general meeting of the Old Girls’ Sports Club Mrs. A. Thomas presided. Arrangements Wefd naade for playing tennis on Mrs. Waldie’s courts. A ladder is to be drawn up and club days are to be Wednesdays. Mrs. C. B. Lepper, who has been spending a few days at New Plymouth, returned to her home yesterday. Mr. W. N. Ackland, who has been visiting Gisborne, has returned. Mr. L. Jennins is home again from the New Plymouth hospital. Mrs. L. Freestone, who has been indisposed, is able to get about again. The residents Of Lepperton entertained Miss Gladys Ackland and Mt. jack Maskery at a gift evening on Friday. Thefe was a splendid attendance and all spent an enjoyable time. Items were interspersed between dances, games and a competition. A sketch by Misses Combs and Jennins was very amusing. Elsie Oliver and Nellie Woisin were delightful in a dance with Miss Combs singing and playing. A competition, finding motor-car names, was won by Miss N. Wallace. Mrs. Gordon Hall played . the music arid Messrs. F. T. Crowe and A. Kilpatrick were masters of ceremonies. On behalf of the district Mr. H. E. Blyde was asked to present Miss Ackland and Mr. Maskery with many gifts. Mr. Blyde said in the course of his remarks that Miss Ackland had lived all her life in the district and was connected with almost every organisation in the district. Mr. Maskery responded on behalf of Miss Ackland and himself. Supper was served by the ladies. At the residence of Mrs. H. B. Lepper on Saturday afternoon the matron of St. Mary’s Home • gave a talk on the workings of the institution. The Lepperton Bowling Club is arranging a social to be held in the near future for the purpose of augmenting the funds, which are in a very low state owing to initial costs Incurred in the preparation of the green, etc.
