SEVERE BURNS SUFFERED

BOTTLE OF VARNISH BURSTS. MAN ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Wellington, Sept 29. Frederick Howard, of King’s Crescent Lower Hutt, was badly burned about the face and body last evening. A bottle of varnish had been placed on the mantlepiece well away from the fire. Mr. Howard and his wife were sitting in front of the stove when the bottle cracked and the contents made contact with the stove. Mrs. Howard heard the crack and managed to escape, but her husband was enveloped in flames. His clothes, which were saturated with varnish, blazed fiercely. In an endeavour to prevent the spread of the fire in the house he rushed outside, but this only made matters worse for himself. Miss Howard and a young man,-however, saved him. Mrs. Howard ran out to alarm the fire brigade and just managed to do so before fainting at the box. She was found there by the brigade. Meanwhile the fire had been extinguished. A doctor was. called and sent Mr. Howard to hospital in the free ambulance.
