TATARAIMAKA NOTES

PATUA FACTORY IMPROVEMENTS. A working bee under the supervision of Mr. R. Davies, Oakura, was recently held at the Patua Dairy factory when good progress was made in beautifying the surroundings. A rockery was made in front and one side prepared for planting shrubs. The natural bush on the other side sweeping down to the river is to be preserved. The factory itself has had modem improvements and additions made inside. A butter plant of most modem pattern has been installed and six suppliers who formerly were “cheese” have turned over to butter. The factory is still making seven more cheeses now than at the same time last year. To celebrate the completion of the extensive alterations the shareholders are giving a public luncheon. Whitebait Catches Poor. The local whitebait season has been poor as yet and though there have been numerous fishers to the Timaru River no catches greater than two cupfuls have been reported. These have been infrequent. The ladies of the district are busily preparing for their annual Plunket rally which this year is to take the form of a mart day.
