ROWING AT NEW PLYMOUTH

ANNUAL REPORT OF CLUB MADE.

REVIEW OF SEASON’S ACTIVITIES.

The activities of the New Plymouth Rowing Club for the past season are outlined in the report to be presented to the annual meeting on Wednesday next.

The season, states the report, was officially opened with the competition for the Hoffman Cup on October 29. Five trophy races were rowed during the season and keen competition was displayed, resulting in many exciting finishes. Results were:—Hoffman Cup: L. Frewin, M. Keenan, N. Way, F. Barlow (J. Bennet, cox). Miniature cups: L. Hill, S. Billing, L. Rutherford, L. Erb (J. Bennett). Silver buttons: R. Roper, A. McGregor, N. Way, L. Stevens (J. Bennett). Silver buttons: H. Billing, L. Frewin, C. Burgess, L. Stevens (A. Martin). Bennett Cup: R. Priar, H. Hughes, L. Frewin, R. Rosser (J. Bennett).

Members spent much of their time during the winter months in preparing the plant for the new season. All boats are now in a satisfactory state of repair. One of the older boats was found beyond re-conditioning after serving tl|e club well for many years. The club is in a strong enough position to replace this with a new boat, which will prove an extra incentive to training crews. Another pair-oar was refitted during the season and proved a valuable asset to the members. A new set of oars was also added to the plant. The boathouse is in a fair state of repair and it was not found necessary to spend money in this direction during the year. The eighth annual regatta was held on New Year’s Day in good weather in conjunction with the Ngamotu beach committee with Messrs. G. E. Roper and C. C. Burgess acting as joint honorary secretaries. The nett proceeds to the club resulted in a profit of approximately £lO as against a loss of, approximately £l7 last year. Social activity was limited to two functions, both of which were run by the . executive committee. The regatta dance was disappointing in comparison with those held on previous occasions and although it proved a very enjoyable evening there was an evident lack of support from visiting oarsmen. On June 7 the presentation social was held and trophies were presented by the president, Mr. T. Campbell, in the presence of a good gathering of friends and club supporters. Thanks are due to Mr. A. Burgess for his work in this department and to those ladies who have assisted the club on different occasions.

On March 22 a general meeting of the club members decided that the club should become an incorporated body under the Registered Societies Act. The rules were revised and approved by the meeting.’ These have been placed with the registrar and the club is now an incorporated society. Members enthusiastically entered into regatta work but were not able to obtain the same measure of success as in the previous year. However, progress was made by the younger members. From performances generally displayed by the members further success should be forthcoming. The club congratulates the Clifton club on regaining the Harris Cup. The following two seconds were gained by the club after meritorious performances: New Plymouth regatta, second open maiden fours, R. Roper (str.), L. Hill (3), N. Way (2), S. Billing (bow), J. Woods (cox); Waitara regatta, second junior pairs, L. Hill (str.), H. Billing (.bow), J. Woods (cox). Expenses have been kept comparatively low in respect of general maintenance and the committee has been able to purchase much needed new plant. Although there is still £7 outstanding on the new boat this is well covered by the cash bank balances, which are approximately £l2. Substantial depreciation has been allowed oh’the boathouse and plant but the assets are being well maintained and the surplus is shown on the balance sheet as approximately £252 in comparison with £2ll last year. Although new plant will be necessary for future requirements, the club is really in an enviable position, having practically no liability and with £252 shown as accumulated funds. The executive committee met on 14 occasions during the season and all meetings were well attended. Early in the season resignations were received from the chairman, Mr. L. W. Oldridge, and from the joint honorary secretary, Mr. T. C. Bellringer. Mr. A. D. McGregor was elected to the committee and the club captain, Mr. H. Hughes, has acted as chairman. The sympathies of the club are extended to the president, Mr. T. Campbell, in the recent loss of his wife.
