TILDEN DEFEATS COCHET
FRANCE BEATEN BY AMERICA. CONTEST OF PROFESSIONALS. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Paris, Sept. 25. United States defeated France by four matches to one at tennis. The matches included the following:— Barnes (United States) defeated Plaa (France) 2—6, 6—4, 6—3, 6—-1. Tilden (United States) defeated Cochet (France) 6—3, 6—4, 6—2. Tilden and Barnes defeated Cochet and Plaa 6—2, 4—6, 6—l, 6—4. Despite the fact that he is 40 years of age against Cochet’s 32, Tilden reproduced his old form and completely outplayed and' outlasted the Frenchman, who failed to stand the strain of the terrifically fest first set. Cochet was unable to cope with the speed of Tilden's returns.
