PEDIGREE HERD SIRES

BUTTER-FAT BULLS WANTED

OPENING SALE AT MANGOREI. TOP PRICE FORTY-ONE GUINEAS. That dairy farmers appreciate the value of butterfat backing in a herd sire was demonstrated yesterday when the first of the season’s pedigree bull fairs was held on the property of Mr. John Hale, Avenue Road, yesterday. Thirty-two yearling and two-year-old bulls were submitted on account of three vendors, Messrs. John Hale, Len Hale and C. H. Weston. The three vendors were prepared to meet the market, and as a result 28 changed hands at an average of 16J guineas, which in view of the conditions must be regarded as satisfactory. There was a representative attendance of buyers from North Taranaki, while there were also a few buyers from South Taranaki. • The cold wind did not tend to the cattle showing themselves to the best advantage, while some were also presented in rather rough condition. There was keen demand for two-year-olds,. especially those with proved butterfat backing. The top price was realised by the two-year-old Holly Oak • Baldwin, . a grandson on the sire’s side of Grannie s Knight, which realised 41 gns., the purchaser being W. Kirkwood, Pungarehu. Another 21-month-old bull submitted on behalf of Mr. Hale, Hollyoak Bravo, by the imported Brampton Wonder Standard out of a grand-daughter of Grannie’s Knight, realised 35 gns., the purchaser being Bert Sheard, Urenui. The eleven bulls sold on behalf of Mr. J. Hale averaged 18.36 gns. The second highest price at the sale, 37J gns., was realised by the 16-month-old Wonder View Canadian, by Standard’s Oxford Lad—Glenroy Poppy, submitted on behalf of Mr. Len Hale and purchased by R. Dobson, Inglewood. Mr. L. Hale’s offering of ten averaged 15 gns. Top price for yearling bulls was secured by Mr. C. H. Weston, two of whose offering "by the imported bull Brampton Dreaming Sam realised 24 gns., Meon Mercury,, out of Pinewoods Golden Stella being secured by R. Dobson, and Mean Maunga, out bf Snow View T .aggie, by J. A. Colmer, Rahotu. Mr. Weston’s offering of seven yearlings averaged 14.28 gns. Arrangements for the sale, which was conducted by Newton King, Ltd., were excellent. Mr. K. Kirk was the auctioneer.
