The rateable capital value of Hawera borough has been reduced by the recent revaluation from £1,683,461 to £1,301,128. The rateable unimproved value has been reduced from £693,339 to £531,839.

Opossum Skin Sales. The fallowing prices were realised for trappers’ lots, of opossum skins from Hawera district sold by the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company at Dunedin: 15 at 7s Id, 27 at 7s 4d, 33 at ss, 21 at ss. 43 at 7s 4d, 136 at 8s 6d. Turi Memorial Temple.

A quantity of timber has been purchased for the erection of the Turi memorial temple at the Wai-o-Turi pa at Patea and has been stacked on the site. It is understood, however, that sufficient timber is not yet to hand to permit any real progress being made with the structure.

Poultry Markets. Smith and Trim Ltd., Hawera, report the following prices for poultry on Saturday were: Cockerels, Is, 2s, 2s 2d, 8s; roosters, 2s 3d, 2s 6d, 2s 7d; fowls, 2s 7d, 2s Bd, 3s 9d, 4s; ducks, 2s 3d; hen and chicks, ss, 8s 6d, 9s 6d. High Wind and Seas. The suddenness of the southerly gale played havoc with clothes lines and the weekly wash, at Patea yesterday. At the port the loading of the Kapuni had been commenced at an early hour so that the vessel could sail shortly after mid-day. By that hour heavy southerly squalls had developed into a gale and heavy seas were running, making shipping movements impossible.

Caravan at Patea Beach. More than the usual interest was displayed by tire large number of bathers at the Patea beach on Sunday in the arrival of the first camper of the season. The party arrived in a sedan car towing a large caravan, which necessitated negotiating the beach hill with care. Its careful progress attracted a number of onlookers until the camping site was reached.

. The Hawera branch of tire Plunket Society will hold a ball in the winter show hall, Hawera, on Friday night. Complete arrangements have been made for this event, which will serve as a celebration of the branch’s completion of 21 years’ existence, and the evening promises to be most enjoyable. A good orchestra has been engaged. On Saturday a children’s party will be held in the same hall. Smith and Trim Ltd., Hawera, will hold a sale of superior household furniture and appointments at the Foresters’ Hall at 1.30 p.m. to-morrow on account of Mr. F. Boase, who has leased his house. A dance will be held in the Pariroa Pa hall on Thursday to celebrate the switchbig on of the electric light. Relief Work Allocation.

Relief work has been allocated to 146 Hawera registered unemployed—seven A class men, 97 B and 42 C class men —compared with 149 last week. For the week ended September 16, 132 men were assisted and the previous week 146 men were given work.
