MONTHLY MEETING HELD.

VISIT OF THE INSPECTORS.

The New Plymouth High Schools’ Board met last night, Mr. H. R. Billing presiding. Others present were Messrs G. H. Dolby, P. J. H. White, J. S. Connett, L. A. Nolan and Miss C. Douglas. Inspectors were to visit the school from September 29 to October 4, when the usual certificates would be awarded, stated Mr. W. H. Moyes, principal of the boys’ school. For some months the surface water from the entrance road to the kitchen block had been doing considerable damage. Erosion was being caused when the water passed over the bank and flowed down to the baths. The outlet would have to be connected with the drain, which led under the. gymnasium, a distance of about a chain and a-half. The grounds staff could do the work. The customary third term decrease in the number of pupils was shown at the opening of the term, reported Miss D. N. Allan, principal of the girls’ school. Recommendations for higher leaving and free place certificates would be made when the inspectors visited the school on November 6. Vocational work was proceeding satisfactorily, reported Mr. A. L. Moore, director of the technical branch. The appearance and comfort of the building had been improved by renovations and repairs. Evening classes were keeping up well. Letters of appreciation had been received from several charitable organisations regarding the action of commercial art students in preparing tickets and show cards. Twelve girls had passed . the typewriting test conduct by the Association of Commercial Science. Farm activities were reported upon by the manager (Mr. C. E. Fowler) and the caretaker of Scotlands (Mr. F. Parker) reported on the grounds.
