DAIRY FACTORY YIELDS

NON-PUBLICATION OF FIGURES.

SAFEGUARDS AGAINST ABUSES.

Comment made at the annual meeting of a dairy company recently this season that the non-publication of factory yield and over-run figures was not desirable was replied to by officers of the Taranaki Federation of Co-operative Dairy Factories yesterday. The contention that the non-publication might lead to abuses was not replied to earlier as it was not brought before the federation until a recent meeting. Mr. A. K. Fyson, secretary, said the speaker at the meeting had considered the non-publication of yield figures might lead to the race for yield again or other practices undesirable from the suppliers’ viewpoint. He was apparently not aware that under the new regulations the Dairy Division required a statement monthly showing yield or overrun. Mr. Fyson understood that these were carefully examined and anything unusual would be noted for investigation. The division was thus in a position to check anything undesirable. Mr. P. O. Veale pointed out that there was a further safeguard. At the grading works samples of butter and cheese were taken at irregular intervals for analysis by the division. Any serious discrepancy between this and the butter-fat figures returned by the company would be investigated.
