PEASE HAWERA CHAMPION
STURROCK DEFEATED IN FINAL. POTTER AND TARRANT ALSO WIN. Results in the Hawera Club’s championship finals, played yesterday in perfect weather, are: Senior, Pease beat Sturrock 2 and 1; intermediate, A. E. Tarrant beat S. Anderson 2 up; junior, Potter beat Robb 6 and '5. This is Pease’s second championship as he beat H. G. Whitehead in the final last year. In a limit championship semi-final Meyer beat Goodwin 3 and 2 and meets Gordon in the final.
In the senior final Pease was hitting all his shots well but he won on his chipping and putting mainly. He did a good round of 77 in the morning to be four up and though Sturrock fought back well in the afternoon Pease finished the match on the 35th green with an eagle 3.
The first nine holes in the morning produced steady golf, both being out in 40. Sturrock took the lead at the. 10th, where after duffing his tee shot he played a mashie to the pin for a three. Pease won four holes on end. At the 15th he sliced from the tee but played an iron approach over the hillocks to leave an easy putt for a three. The 17th was halved and the 18th was won by Pease in an unusual way. He laid Sturrock a stymie and Sturrock tried to “cut” his ball around the other, laying Pease a stymie in turn Pease’s attempt and clip over was mishit and his ball struck Sturrock’s. Sturrock’s ball bounced over the hole, into which Pease’s trickled for a win.
Though stymied at the first hole in the afternoon, Pease secured a half with a good chip and at the next hole Sturrock took three putts to halve in bogey fives. Sturrock took the 4th with a five but Pease got it back at the sth. All the
holes until the 11th were halved, Sturrock missing a short putt for a win at the Bth. Pease duffed his tee shot at Cliff, while Sturrock played a perfect three to reduce his deficit to three, Sturrock nearly got a three at the nex;
but his fourth was good enough to win. The 14th was halved in fours and Sturrock won the next wjth three. The 16th was halved in fours, leaving Pease one up with two to play. At the 400 yd 17th both were on in two, with Stur-
rock the nearer. Pease, however, sank his putt from the edge of the green ■ for an eagle three and the match. .
