DISPUTE OVER CURD TEST

WAIRARAPA MANAGERS’ VIEW OBJECTION TO WOODVILLE REPORT. FEAR FOR INDUSTRY’S WELFARE. CONFIDENCE IN DAIRY DIVISION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Carterton, Sept. 4. A meeting of Wairarapa factory managers was held at Featherston to consider the report of a meeting held in Woodville of dairy factory representatives on the curd test question. . The meeting took strong exception to the resolution reported as being passed at Woodville by a meeting, supposed to be of representatives of dairy factories and factory managers, including those of Wairarapa, condemning the curd test for milk grading, and emphatically denied that factory managers from Wairarapa were resferesented at that meeting. While not wishing to take sides in a technical dispute calculated only to wreck the attempt being made to improve the cheese industry, the meeting of Wairarapa managers was unanimously of the opinion: that the. curd test was capable of detecting milk unsuited for manufacturing first-class cheese; that it was easily manipulated and fitted in best with the ordinary factory practice and was eminently suited to demonstrate to suppliers the difference between first and second-grade milk; that as there was a difference of opinion even among scientists about the respective merits of various tests used for milk grading, the dispute was deplorable as it savoured more of personal elements than a real endeavour to bring about an improvement in the quality of cheese milk. The meeting reaffirmed its confidence in the Dairy Division and Mr. W. M. Singelton as director.
