HOPEFUL SIGNS IN BRITAIN
RAILWAY EARNINGS RISING LESS STRESS ON OBSTACLES STOCK EXCHANGE ACTIVITY 7 NORMAL EXCHANGE URGED British Wireless. Rugby, Aug. 31. Signs of returning confidence and activity in business continue. Rail traffic figures show a substantial improvement. They are up by nearly half a million pounds on the first seven weeks of the new financial year. The total earnings of the four main line railway companies last week were £119,000 higher than for the corresponding week last year. Raw materials and other goods, as well as passengers, show an increase and this is taken as one of several indications which exist of a steady trade revival. The Times city editor states it is generally realised that no general restoration of world finance and trade can take place until the common international monetary standard is restored and exchange restrictions abolished.
