Mystery surrounded the plight of eight American Catholic missionaries, including six women, who were besieged in the wallet! town of Yuenchow, in the province of Hunan, where Government forces were besieging bandits led by a notorious rebel leader named Chen. Seven weeks had elapsed without word from the captives, and grave fears were felt for their safety.
