A GUIDE FOR RACEGOERS. (By “Hurry On.”) Maiden Hunters’ Steeplechase. Hauwai: Second in Hunters’ Flat at Wanganui; schooled well at Awapuni' last week. Michael Shimose: Was second in Hunt Cup two years ago; ran prominently at the point-to-point on the King’s Birthday. Ngareta: Promising horse who galloped well on Thursday morning; won two events at the point-to-point on June 3 with a lot in hand. Shamin: A useful hunter and a safe fencer. Money Boy: Has been in solid work during the last month; safe fencer with a fair amount of pace. Mataro: Schooled fairly well on Thursday; has shown a good turn of pace. Silver Band: Failed at Wanganui, but has been working well at Hawera since then. Opunake Hack Scurry. Taitoru: Ran some good races last spring, including a third to Carfex and Merry Way in this race last year; subsequently went off but should do better this season. Diversion: Has shown pace and has been placed in the north; galloped well on Tuesday morning at Takanini. Bold Bid: Has raced only once, when he showed a good turn of pace at Feilding last spring; has been galloping well at New Plymouth. No Doubt: A useful two-year-old last season; was twice runner-up to Merry Way at Hawera last February; has been showing premise on .the track at Hawera. Round Table: Will be having his first race; has been shaping well at Hawera. Haunui: Has given promise but has disappointed with the colours up. Tahurangi: Will be having his first race but has shown a fine turn of pace on the tracks. Lebaron: No performances. Matorni: Showed a lot of pace as a two-year-old and worked pleasingly on Thursday morning. Artful Dodger: No performances. Stratford Handicap. Carfex: A leading three-year-old last season; has done most of his racing over a. distance but has been sprinting well on the track lately. Lucky Alice: Showed good form last autumn, when she won at Wanganui; has been troubled with soreness lately. Glenvane: A ‘hack “boom” of last spring, when he won four races on end. Failed at Trentham but : has improved since and has been working in good style. ' Cereal: A speedy hack who was only once out of a place last season. Merry Way: Showed much promise last autumn, when she won a double in great style at Stratford; has been shaping well on the tracks lately. Taranaki Hunt Cup. Winnagan: A greatly improved hunter; has won three times and been second once in his last four stars; an accomplished jumper; won the race two years ago. Don Erma: An improving hunter; has won a point-to-point at Waverley and maiden steeplechase at Wanganui in his only , two starts; has been working well at Hawera. Arikitea: Showed good form last spring but his recent efforts have not been encouraging; was third at Wanganui. Ngareta: A promising hunter; showed good form at point-to-point on King’s Birthday and has done well since. Shamin, Mataro and Money Boy: All in the opening event; their prospects can be better judged by their showings there. Waihi Hack Handicap. : March Alone: Won at Hawera in May in great style, but disappointed at Trentham; working well at Hawera. , Glowlight: Small but game and stays on; she may contest the Members’ Handicap. . St..Clara: A maiden who has been galloping well at Hawera; ran a fine race into third place at Egmont winter meeting, '■ Silk Sox: Will be having his first real outing, though he won a flat race at the point-to-point on June 3 in fine style. Members’ Handicap. Chief Joy: Was very useful over this distance at northern meetings during th® last two seasons; may need the race. Lucky Alice: See Stratford Handicap. Little Doubt: A good galloper when in the mood; won on his last start at Otaki in June. Richfield: A good horse when right; has been doing good work at Hawera. Glowlight: An honest little mare who can be depended on to be in it all th® ■way. Hunters’ Flat Handicap. Arikitea: Won last year; would be hard to beat if he strikes form. Winnagan: Would go well if reserved, but will probably tackle the Hunt Cup. Hauwai: Second to Count Palatine in similar class of event at Wanganui; expected to go well. I The Hiker: Was unlucky to lose hurdle race at Pakuranga; has a lot of pace for a hunter. Count Lendroff: A likely ’sort who is improving with racing. Burnwood: Ran a good race at Wanganui into third place behind Count Palatine and Hauwai. Ngareta: Galloped well enough on Thursday to be prominent if reserved. Silver Band: Will have some friends.
