The 1933-34 racing season in Taranaki will open with the Taranaki Hunt Club’s meeting on the New Plymouth racecourse to day. Though this gathering is not perhaps as important as some later in the season, it has in the past served to introduce to the racing public some of the best of provincial performers. A glance through the winners of the maiden events discloses names like Lady Quex, Bisox, Avola, Orapai, Gibraltar and Royal Mint, while it was in the Waihi Hack that that great mare Bright Glow scored her first success. Among others who have competed in the hack events at the meeting have been Te Monanui, The Banker, Muraaki, Cold Steel, Hipo, The Stork, Peter Jackson and Income. In the open races performers of the calibre of Reremoana, Seatown, Rational, Inah, Simonides, Depredation and Haoriri have taken part. It will thus be seen that the meeting has served as a great trial ground for horses trained in the province, and that the form displayed has nearly always proved worth following. Though the fields to-day are perhaps not as numerous as in pas t years, the material is well up to standard to-day. Included in the fields are many very promising horses who will certainly play their parts in the big events during the next few months. They will all be seen in action to day, when their Showing will be watched with the greatest interest. The final trials have shown that they are ready for the fray, but the race with the colours up is the acid test.
