A man had received an increase of salary- which rendered him liable to income tax for the first time. He received the usual demand notes, but, not understanding them, threw them away. Finally an inspector called, and the man asked him to explain matters. '“Well, it’s like this,” said the inspector. "Suppose you earned £lOOO, you would have to pay, say, £lOO or so for income tax.” “And if I lost £lOOO, would they give me £100?” “Oh, no,” was the reply. “Well, I shan’t join,” said the man decidedly. .. * # # * SHEER WASTE. Dorothy: And if I go over in that nice dark comer, will you promise not to hug me ? Joe: Yes. Dorothy: And not to kiss me ? Joe: Yes. Dorothy: Then what do you want me to go over there for? * * * * Foreman: What’s all that arguing about down the road ? Labourer (indignantly): Why, the man running the steam roller wants us to call him a chauffeur. j
NOT SO SIMPLE.
Hubby and • his wife on a Whitsun motor tour came to a quaint, old-world village. “Oh, John, dear,” she exclaimed, “do let us stop here for a while! I love villages like this, and the simple country folk.” John grimaced. * “No fear!” he said firmly. “The last time I stopped here some youngsters stole my rear lamp, then the village policeman took my name and address for not having one. Eventually I was fined seven and six, and they worked a dud half-crown on me in my change. Simple, you say ? I don’t think ! I’m not taking any more chances. I’ve learnt my lesson.” #a# ’ • Publisher (to struggling author): Your work is quite good, and has style, but my firm is interested only in the work of writers well-known names. Author (delightedly): Splendid! We can come to terms. My name’s Smith, you know. FORESIGHT. “These seeds are biennials—they won’t flower until the second year.” “Oh, I took that into consideration. They are last year’s seeds.”
