WOMEN’S DIVISION.

Pohokura: The branch celebrated its first birthday party on August 25, when a large number of members and friends attended. Mrs. L. E. Metcalfe presided. Solos were sung by Mrs. Gibbs (Te Popo); Mrs. Jackson (Pohokura), and Miss Milne (Toko). A tap dance was given by'Miss Dorothy Winmill (Stratford). Visitors were given time to inspect a fine display of work which occupied the whole of the school. The school was decorated with the division’s colours. The tables were also decorated with spring flowers and fans to tone. The birthday cake was made and iced by Mrs. Metcalfe. The competition for the best article costing only Is 6d was won by Mrs. A. Loveday and the cake guessing by Miss E. Coulter. The novelty was a draw between Mrs. R. McCluggage and Miss M. MacCluggage, Pohokura. Credit is due to the president. Votes of sympathy were passed to those in hospital. Telegrams and letters were read from other branches. Her Last Dance. Morino Sawa has danced her last swan dance. She was Japan’s most famous dancer, and was called the Pavlova of the East. Her lithe figure had taken Tokio by storm, and people had flocked to the Seoul Theatre, enchanted by her performances. One day, though she did not realise the significance of her dance at that moment, Morino danced the beautiful dying swan dance, made famous by the Russian Pavlova, upon whose life the little Japanese girl had modelled her own. The swan of the East fluttered through her last few and then sank gracefully and sadly to the ground, her white wings folded forever in the peace of death. The storm of applause which greeted the danct suddenly ceased. The audience learned that Morino Sawa had danced her dying swan dance for the last time. Long Life for Shoes and Boots.
