ROUND ABOUT THE HOUSE.

THE SEWING MACHINE.

(By

Housekeeper.)

When the machine slips a stitch, or breaks the cotton, don’t send it at once to be repaired. Rather change the needle, which may be wrongly set, blunt-pointed, or too fine for the cotton. Should the machine run stiffly in cold weathar, don’t add more oil. Turn the top back, leave the works exposed to the fire for a little while, then wipe with a paraffin rag. Don’t oil the machine with paraffin it spoils the bearings. Before putting it away, oil the bearings with the best machine oil, and before using again wipe carefully with a paraffin rag. Odd Pieces of Lino. When laying new oil-cloth, do not throw away the old. Cut from it the best pieces making them square or oblong, and slightly rounding the corners. They make excellent mats to lay on the kitchen floor whilst cooking and doing “messy” work, and will protect the new lino. The smaller pieces may be cut into narrow strips and slightly rolled. Then, placed on paper, _ they will take the place of firewood in lighting a file.
