SOUTH GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP MRS. COOK BEATEN 2 IIN FINAL MRS. KNEWSTUBB’S FAIRFIELD. Miss C. G. Robertson (HaweraX won the South Taranaki ladies’ golf championship in the tournament that concluded at- Hawera yesterday, beating Mrs. Cook (Wanganui) 2 up and 1 to play in the finaL Mrs. Knewstubb (Stratford) won the Fairfield handicap, beating Mrs. Dalgetty (Hawera) 4 and 2 in the final. The final stages of the match play resulted:— CHAMPIONSHIP. , Semi-finals. Mi«s Robertson beat Mrs. Pease, 4 and 2. Mrs. Cook beat Mrs. Gibert, 5 and 4. Final. Miss Robertson beat Mrs. Cook, 2 and 1. There was a mixture of good and bad play in the championship final, which Miss Robertson won by a narrow margin. Neither player was putting well and, though Mrs. Cook occasionally gained great advantages from her driving, this was erratic. Her approaching was excellent but Miss Robertson, who had the better of the luck, was steadier all round. A half stymie on the 12th. green was crucial as it lost Mrs. Cook a chance of taking the lead, which Miss Robertson held from Crater onwards. Miss Robertson won the first hole with a birdie three, sinking a long putt. Mrs. Cook played the second hole perfectly and a long iron second coupled with a dead approach gave her a win in four to six. She took the lead for the only time in the match at Exodus with a good orthodox five while Miss Robertson ran into trouble. She duffed her approach and was short with -a second, attempt, taking seven. Miss Robertson recovered the hole at Hummocks, mainly through a beautiful third which left her a short putt. Mrs. Cook' was not favoured by' her lies, which with a too short approach and two missed putts made her six. Both were in the marram grass at the right of the short fifth with. their tee shots but Miss Robertson was out in one stroke to her opponent’s two to win in 4-5. Mrs. Cook had an awkward lie on a hillock to the right of the sixth fairway but recovered with a long mashie shot. Miss Robertson’s third ran through and while Mrs. Cook completed a bogey five the Hawera player missed her second putt and took six, the match being square again. Miss Robertson played Sandy Hook in a bogey four to take the lead again; her opponent pulled her drive into the rough and hit the fence with her second to take six. Egmont was halved in sixes; Mrs. Cook was to the left all the time but both were on in threes with Miss Robertson closer. Miss Robertson missed a yard putt for a win. They halved the ninth hole in fives. Mrs. Cook hit a long ball and then put her second „ through, while Miss Robertson was short for two. Miss Robertson missed another fairly short putt but a half stymie saw Mrs. Cook also miss her four and they turned with Miss Robertson one up. The short tenth was halved in Mrs. Cook played Plateau well, a long drive and a full mashie taking her on to the green for a bogey four to Miss Robertson’s six, all square once more. Mrs. Cook should have won Sie Cliff but it went to Miss Robertson in 4—5. Miss Robertson missed a longish putt for a three and half stymied her opponent, who took three putts. Miss Robertson duffed her drive at the 13th., a splendid spoon recovering lost ground for her. Mrs. Cook’s long drive and accurate second gave her an advantage which three putts lost for her again, the hole being halved in fives. Mrs. Cook’s drive at Fairfield was mishit and landed her in a tin. 20 yards from the tee. She was short with her third, being down in six. Miss Robertson played the hole well in a bogey four to increase her lead to two up. The 15th. and 16th. were halved in fours and fives, making Miss Robertson dormie two. She played Coo-ee quite well and though Mrs. Cook’s second ran kindly for her she could do no better than a half in bogey fives, leaving Miss Robertson the winner 2 and 1. ■ ■ Mrs. Knewstubb, in the final of the Fairfield Handicap against Mrs. Dalgetty, made a good start, running to five up at tire seventh, two holes having been halved. Mrs. Dalgetty won the eighth, and the ninth was halved. Mrs. Knewstubb went to five up with a two at Smoko. Mrs. Dalgetty fought back but her . opponent was dormie four at Fairfield. Mrs. Dalgetty won the 15th. but her opponent won Return and the match 3 and 1. The second bogey handicap was won by Mrs. Marton, 1 down. Miss Dakin, 2 up, won the junior event. The consolation prize was also awarded on this event and Miss Hawken, who had finished 1 down but was eliminated on a count back, won the trophy. The third day’s putting was won by Mrs. Smith. Mrs. Duncan and Miss Richardson won the Canadian foursome yesterday afternoon. Frizes were presented by Miss E. Burgess, who thanked the secretaries (Mrs. W. A. Fendall and Miss G. Death) for their work, and the starter (Mr. S. C. Tonks). She mentioned that the championship cup, competed for for the first time, had been donated by the Hawera men’s club. Mrs. Gilbert (Wanganui) expressed the thanks of the visitors for the hospitality shown them.
