INFLUX OF CARPENTERS

RESULT OF BUILDING BOOM. EIGHTY MEN APPLY FOR WORK. There are stated to be about 20 outside carpenters at present looking for work at Hawera, while the completion of two dairy factories in the district has thrown about 20 local men out of employment. Broadway beauties frolic with Hollywood cowboys and the screen’s brightest comedy stars win laughs at the expense of the roughest and toughest villains who ever chased a maiden or frightened a baby. The inimitable Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey head the comedy ranks with Eddie Quillan, a star in his own right, playing the juvenile lead. The Broadway brigade is led by Dorothy Lee, Arline Judge and Kitty Kelly. William Seiter directed the production, which is based upon George Gershwin's sensational musical comedy. In endeavouring to bring peace to the community and observe strict neutrality in a range war, Buck Jones as the sheriff incurs the enmity of both factions. His difficulties continue to the last minute. Even at the eleventh hour, when he is needed to rescue his friend from a lynching mob, he is shot. How does he get himself out of it all? Jones is supported by a cast of well-known screen names, including John Wayne, Susan Fleming, Wallace MacDonald, Harry Woods, Ed Le Saint and William Walling. Ross Lederman directed.
