BETTER MAILS SERVICE

HAWERA AND NORTHERN TOWNS. EFFECT OF NEW STRATFORD LINE. The Stratford-Main Trunk railway means a much improved mail service with the north for Hawera and adjacent district. This is particularly so with mail from Hawera to northern post offices. At present the mail for Auckland closes' at Hawera at 9.30 am. and does not reach Auckland till 7.6 a.m. the following day. An additional mail for letters only closses at 3.10 p.m. daily, connecting with the Limited express and arriving at Auckland at 9.45 a.m. the following day. The Stratford express will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and on those days the service will be most improved. On those days the mail for Taumarunui and northwards will close at 5 p.m. and reach Auckland at 7.6 a.m. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, when only a goods train will run, the closing of the mail will be advanced an hour from the present time to 10.30 a.m. On Saturdays there will be no change as there is no connection. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays the present letter mail will be continued. From northern offices to Hawera the improvement is not so marked. Only Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays will be affected. On those days mails which close in the early evening of the previous day at Auckland will arrive at 6.25 a.m. in time for sorting for the morning delivery. On other days this mail will arrive at the same time as at present, 11 a.m. PATEA LICENSING COMMITTEE. QUARTERLY MEETING HELD. The adjourned annual and quarterly .meeting of the Patea Licensing Committee was held at Hawera yesterday, Mr. E. Dixon presiding. The application of E. F. de Touret for the issue of a new license in respect of the Commercial Hotel, Waverley, was further adjourned to December 6. The committee approved the changing of the name from “Commercial” to “Waverley,” and the immediate use of the new hotel premises by the licensee on the completion of the building to the satisfaction of the authorities. TE ROTI DISTRICT NEWS. EUCHRE AND DANCE SOCIAL. There was a record attendance at the Te Roti hall on Tuesday evening, when the members of St. Luke’s Church held a euchre party and dance to raise funds for the church. The prizes for the euchre were won by Mrs. Grierson 1, Miss Skedgwell 2, Mrs. Simpson silent, Miss R. Feron consolation; Mr. R. Hooper 1, Mr. R. Walden 2, Mr. Tippet silent, Mr. J. Dombroski consolation.- After supper the Rev. W. Langstone presented the prizes. The hall was then cleared for dancing. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss O. Simpson and Mr. A. Magill and a Monte Carlo waltz by Miss I. Reid and Mr. R. Walden. An open waltzing competition drew a large number of entries and the finals resulted in Mr. R. Walden and Miss V. Grierson being placed first, Mr. Bergenson and Miss Briscoe second and Mr. F. Speed and Miss I. Reid third. Mr. Dobson (Christchurch) and Mr. White (Wanganui) were the judges. Music for the dance was supplied by Mrs. Bennet, extras being played by Mr. Smith (Normanby). Miss Joy Kaye, Inglewood, who has been spending the holidays with Miss Jean McAsey, has returned home. Miss Jean McAsey has gone to Inglewood for a few days and is the guest of Miss Joy Kaye. Miss Joyce Jordan is at home for the holidays. PATEA GOLF CLUB TEAM. PLAYERS TO VISIT BELMONT. The Patea golf team to play Belmont at Wanganui during the week-end has been selected as follows: Hunger, Hughes, Fraser, Currie, Mitchell, Young, Harris, Bourn, Haddow, K. Honeyfield, McWilliam, Wither, Gilbert, C. Honeyfield, Tuohy, Drummond, Dobson, Adams, Lester, Glenny. Emergencies: Hodge, Lazarus, Richardson, Nightingale and Harsent. In the junior championship Adams will play Drummond. The first round must be played by September 10. ' MANAIA LADIES’ GOLF CLUB. DRAW FOR MEDAL ROUND. Following is the draw for the L.G.U. medal round to be played on Tuesday at Manaia: — Seniors: Miss D. Paterson and Mrs. Winter, Miss C. Lloyd and Miss Ryan, Mrs. Meuli and Mrs. H. Smith and Trim Ltd., Hawera, advertises particulars of mart sales to-day of fruit and produce at 11 a.m. and cord rata blocks,. two trucks, poultry, cream cans and a lot of useful sundries and furniture a’ 1.30 p.m. The fifth annual ball of the South Taranaki branch of the New Plymouth High School Old Boys’ Association will be held on October 23. The annual ball of the Opunake Golf Club will be held next Wednesday. The committee has made complete preparations to ensure an enjoyable evening. Entries close to-day for the Opunake Presbyterian sale of work and fancy fair. There are classes for cookery work, etc. The event will be held on Monday, a variety of attractions having been arranged. A complimentary ball will be tendered to the Pihama Ladies’ Hockey Club on September 15, when the season’s trophies will be presented. The spring flower show of the Manaia Presbyterian Church will be held in the Manaia town hall on September 19. Miss Nancy Kent, L.T.C.L., teacher of elocution and dramatic art, will resume tuition on Monday. She may be interviewed to-day from 2 to 4 p.m. at her studio, 223 High Street, next Linkhom's.
