TUNNELLERS’ STRIKE ENDS
DISPUTE OVER TAWA FLAT FLAW. MEN ACCEPT SETTLEMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Aug. 31. Settlement of the dispute on the Tawa Flat railway deviation, as a result of which 120 tunnellers have been on strike since August 8, was announced to-day by Mr. A. Cook, general secretary of the New Zealand Workers’ Union. The men would resume work on Monday morning, he said. The Minister of Public Works (the Hon. J. Bitchener) had agreed to pay £1 a shift to all men engaged in the bad “break” for a fortnight, which time was considered ample to finish the break. The Minister also agreed to regard the men’s holiday privileges as being not affected by their action in ceasing work during the period of negotiations. The conditions of the settlement have been submitted to a full meeting of the men and by a large majority it has been agreed to resume work.
