GOLF BOURSE RECORD SET
MISS 0. KAY AT MELBOURNE NATIONAL TITLE QUALIFIERS THREE NEW ZEALANDERS SPORTING OFFER DECLINED By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 10.20 p.m. Melbourne, Aug. 31. Miss Oliver Kay (New Zealand) was the star performer in the qualifying rounds of the Australian women’s golf championship and fully justified her Dominion rating of plus two by beating by two strokes the course record of 77 for the links made by her team-mate, Miss Gaisford. Miss Kay’s exhibition was marvellous to watch even though she had three putts on two greens, indicating the brilliance of her performance. Miss Lefebvre (N.S.W.) played below standard, returning 92. Miss Susie Tolhurst (Victoria), despite influenza, showed up well with 80. Miss Mona Macleod, the defending champion, returned 82, which makes her certain to qualify for the final sixteen. Returning the lowest cards for the knock-out tournaments to be played on Monday, the following qualified: Miss Kay 82—75—157, Miss Tolhurst 87—80—167, Miss Macleod 86—82—168, Mrs. Alex Russell (Victoria) 78—90—168, Miss Gaisford 84—84—168, Miss Sale (Tasmania), Miss Hood Hammond (N.S.W.), Miss Lascelles (Victoria), Miss Shirley Tolhurst (Victoria), Miss Kernot (Victoria), Miss S. Jones (N.S.W.) and Mrs. Dodshun (N.Z.) 87—87—174, Miss Lefebvre (N.S.W.), Miss Perry (Tasmania), Miss Nankivell (Victoria). /Miss Kay was hitting particularly well yesterday for 82 and seemed more at home in extricating from bunkers. Miss Gaisford played impressively except on the green. Miss Susie Tolhurst showed the effects of her illness with her 87. Mrs. Williams (N.Z.) showed an improvement in health to-day and is about again. Golfers highly appreciated her sporting offer, in view of the influenza epidemic among leading golfers, to postpone the national matches for another week, but the Golf Union, although commending the splendid sporting spirit, could not agree in view of fixtures.
